Control of gas radiant heaters: why use a black globe sensor for optimal thermal comfort?

gas radiant heater

In industrial or logistics environments, gas radiant heating is a commonly used solution. These systems provide fast and localized infrared heating, ideal for large, poorly insulated spaces. However, controlling these systems can be challenging when relying solely on ambient air temperature. This is where the black bulb temperature sensor comes into play.

Understanding resultant temperature: closer to actual perceived comfort

A standard ambient temperature sensor only measures the air. However, in the case of gas radiant heaters, it’s not the air that’s primarily heated, but rather surfaces, workstations, machines… and people. As a result, the air may remain relatively cool, even though thermal comfort is effectively achieved. To get an accurate reading of perceived comfort, it’s better to measure the resultant temperature.

This parameter is much more representative of the comfort actually felt by occupants.

Why are standard temperature sensors not sufficient for controlling gas radiant heaters?

Gas radiant heaters warm people and objects directly through radiation. As a result, air temperature can remain low even though occupants feel warm.

An air-only sensor can therefore:

  • Underestimate actual comfort, leading to a misinterpretation of climate conditions
  • Cause energy overconsumption, as the heating system may be unnecessarily activated to reach an air temperature setpoint.
  • Reduce the energy efficiency of the installation.

The advantages of the Enless Wireless LoRaWAN black blub sensor

The Enless Wireless sensor with black bulb probe provides accurate and relevant measurement of the resultant temperature:

  • LoRaWAN wireless technology: long-range, low power consumption
  • Simplified integration into BMS via Enless proprietary LoRa receivers (Modbus, BACnet, or HTTP)
  • Quick and non-invasive installation

For effective control of gas radiant heaters, it is essential to rely on meaningful data: the resultant temperature.

The Enless Wireless black bulb sensor is the ideal solution to combine thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and easy integration.
