HVAC Monitoring in Nursing Homes Using Enless LoRa Sensors – in Partnership with BTIB and Hydroelec

Table of Contents

The winter season calls for special attention to the well-being of the most vulnerable individuals. That is why the city of Rosny-sous-Bois, in the Paris region, enlisted the services of Hydroelec Ingénierie to improve the comfort of residents at the Ambroise Croizat retirement home, which houses 81 residents. Drawing on its expertise in heating systems, the company implemented a wireless monitoring solution during the winter of 2022, enabling the nursing home to save energy and adjust the thermal comfort for its residents.

Background:

Before Hydroelec Ingénierie stepped in, no system for measuring temperatures had yet been installed at the Ambroise Croizat nursing home. It was therefore necessary to collect real-time data from the facility’s rooms in order to monitor their ambient temperatures. The goal of the project was to monitor the coldest rooms and automatically adjust them to maintain an ideal indoor temperature.

The World Health Organization recommends that older adults classified as frail should not be exposed to temperatures below 20 degrees, while the International Organization for Standardization recommends that maximum temperatures should not exceed 26 degrees. The ideal temperature range is between 20°C and 22°C, with the possibility of a drop in temperature at night but never below 18°C.

The project led by Hydroelec is also part of the facility’s efforts to comply with the BACS decree, Decree No. 2020-887, published on July 21, 2020, in the Official Journal by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which requires all new and existing commercial (non-residential) buildings to be equipped with an automation and control system by January 1, 2025. It is worth recalling that the objective of this decree is to contribute to improving energy performance and reducing CO2 emissions in commercial buildings.

The project's objectives:

Hydroelec Ingénierie aimed to implement a comprehensive monitoring system designed to achieve the ideal indoor temperature in the homes and thereby improve the comfort of their occupants. The project’s objectives centered on:

  • Improving occupants' comfort and well-being
  • Compliance with the BACS Decree
  • Classifying the building as Class A or B in order to be eligible for BMS funding BMS the Energy Efficiency Certificate (EEC) program.

To achieve these goals, Hydroelec has implemented a control system designed to optimize energy performance through the installation of sensors and smart probes, with data monitored in real time.

Products installed:

In total, about ten Enless Wireless wireless radio temperature and humidity sensors were installed at the Ambroise Croizat retirement home using LoRa Easy wireless technology. An Enless Wireless LoRa receiver using the BACnet IP protocol was deployed on the terrace and connected to a Niagara MAC36NL controller from BTIB to enable heating control for all resident rooms.

This receiver retrieves temperature readings from ambient sensors installed up to 70 meters away, with data recorded every 30 minutes.

“Enless Wireless sensors are high-quality products, and the standout feature of this line is its transmission range. This is a real competitive advantage for the product line. Thanks to its ease of integration, the system was up and running in just one day.”

Jean Philippe Poiret, BMS Systems Engineer at Hydroelec Ingénierie

Future projects:

The city of Rosny-sous-Bois aims to continue its energy transition. For this reason, new temperature sensors will be installed in the municipality’s various public buildings in the near future. The city of Rosny-sous-Bois’s ultimate goal is to centralize energy data from all of its public buildings in a single hypervisor.
