LoRaWAN

The LoRaWAN protocol is an open communication standard known for its long range and low power consumption. There are two distinct LoRaWAN architectures.

Private LoRaWAN

In private LoRaWAN mode, you build your own LoRaWAN network.

The principle is simple: your sensors measure data and transmit it via radio using the LoRaWAN protocol. These messages are received by a LoRaWAN gateway that you will also have installed on your site. A LoRaWAN gateway can receive data from any LoRaWAN sensor on the market. The data received by the gateway is then made available to a LoRa Network Server (LNS), which can be either directly embedded in the gateway or hosted remotely.

Unlike public LoRaWAN (see below), the infrastructure you set up belongs to you. You don’t have to pay a subscription fee to connect your sensors to your gateway. You have full control over your architecture from start to finish, and your data remains 100% on your premises.

Private LoRaWAN mode is particularly useful for centralizing sensor data via a gateway so that it can be made available to a PLC using protocols such as Modbus or BACnet.

Build your own private LoRaWAN network

Enless helps you set up a private LoRaWAN network by providing sensors and a LoRaWAN gateway. This gives you both the “measurement” and “reception” components. All Enless sensors are natively decoded by the LoRaWAN gateway, and their data is converted into Modbus tables or BACnet objects.

Enless LoRaWAN sensors are compatible with all LoRaWAN gateways on the market, and conversely, the Enless LoRaWAN gateway can communicate with all LoRaWAN sensors on the market.

Public LoRaWAN

In a public or operator-managed LoRaWAN network, your sensors will transmit their data, which will be picked up by the antennas of a LoRaWAN operator (who has already deployed a nationwide network). The operator is responsible for collecting this information and making it available to you via a backend system.

You’ll be able to create APIs between the operator’s backend and your monitoring tools or IoT platforms to retrieve data from your sensors and format it.

The advantage? You don’t have to buy, install, or maintain any gateways: you rely entirely on the operator’s network. On the other hand, the pricing model is different: you pay a subscription fee to the operator for each sensor you want to connect.
