Improved energy efficiency

Improving the Energy Performance of Buildings in Wallonia with NRB

The end of May holds promising prospects for Enless Wireless in Wallonia. Indeed, the manufacturer of low-power, ultra-long-range wireless sensors has just been officially selected by the Walloon government delegation as the exclusive supplier of radio solutions for monitoring building energy performance as part of the RenoWatt initiative.

RenoWatt, an initiative designed to assist local authorities in Wallonia, aims to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings by supporting participating municipalities in Wallonia in the implementation of energy performance contracts (EPCs) that include renovation work on the relevant sites.

In 2017, five contracts have already been signed involving 12 public authorities, representing the largest energy performance contracts ever concluded in Belgium. Between 125 and 220 buildings are currently under review, including about 50 schools, a dozen sports complexes, a hospital, libraries, performance venues, city halls, and more.

Through these five energy performance audits, the RenoWatt initiative aims to achieve 34% energy savings and reduce CO2 emissions by 7,500 tons.

Starting in June, Enless Wireless will begin providing monitoring solutions designed to ensure the comfort of occupants at various sites. A significant number of ambient temperature and humidity transmitters will be deployed in several phases. The transmitters will communicate using the Sigfox protocol. An initial batch of about 100 Enless Wireless sensors has already been deployed.

The local operator Sigfox Engie M2M will be responsible for providing the associated connectivity. This project strengthens the relationship between Enless and the operator, which is already involved in joint projects in Belgium.

The transmitted data will be sent to the data visualization and analysis platform developed by NRB, one of the major players in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector in Wallonia.

The NRB Group, which employs more than 2,000 people, is made up of several companies specializing in IT services. NRB focuses on sectors such as the public and social sectors, energy and utilities, financial services, and industry. The company offers a wide range of services organized around four main areas: Consulting, Software, Infrastructure & Cloud, and Managed Staffing. As an IoT specialist, NRB has already deployed various types of connected devices in other past projects.

RenoWatt aligns with the recommendations of the 2030 Air, Climate, and Energy Plan for Wallonia, which aims, among other things, to achieve a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions (compared to the 1990 baseline year) and to increase the share of renewable energy to 32% of total energy consumption.

The RenoWatt project, which ran its pilot phase from 2014 to 2017, has already received several awards, including the European “Best Energy Service Project 2017” award and the global “AEE’s Western Europe Region Institutional Energy Management Award 2018.”
