nanoGrid, a Belgian energy management company founded in 2012, and Enless Wireless have been collaborating for over four years.
In terms of operations, this means that nanoGrid has connected 1,300 Enless Wireless remote meter reading sensors to date in Europe, primarily on the Sigfox network.
The comprehensive solution that nanoGrid provides to its clients—mostly large European companies in the utilities sector (electricity, water, and gas distribution, etc.)—essentially involves collecting consumption data at regular intervals to generate consumption profiles.
Background
Energy distribution companies are subject to specific regulations and are therefore required to monitor their energy consumption.
For end users—primarily large European companies—measuring energy consumption results in a ranking and a score that highlight their commitment to reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint.
Several organizations, such asEPRA (the European Public Real Estate Association ), which represents publicly traded European real estate companies, assign scores to companies based on their energy and environmental impact.
What is the detailed solution provided by nanoGrid through its use of Enless sensors?

The first step is to obtain data from energy suppliers.
Today, according to Timour Matthys, CTO of nanoGrid, “40% of meters in the field are not smart, so we have to go out and collect the data. Connecting Enless Wireless’s remote meter reading transmitters is a good way to retrieve that data, which is the first step in our energy management solution.”

The data is then transmitted via radio from the Enless Wireless transmitters to the Sigfox operator’s cloud, where it is analyzed in real time using a comprehensive platform/application developed by nanoGrid that enables the generation of reports, alerts, and more.

The data can then be used by facilities managers and technical teams to track energy consumption, allocate billing costs, and so on.
The Case of WDP in the Logistics Sector

WDP is a major investment firm in the logistics real estate sector (owner of TNT, DHL, etc.), with a portfolio of 300 logistics warehouses.

Timour Matthys explains the added value of the solution provided to this client: “For one of our major clients, WDP – Warehouses with Brains, nanoGrid handles energy reporting. Collecting data on electricity, water, and gas consumption can be a tedious and costly process. This is especially true when monitoring remote water and gas meters, which are often located outside the buildings themselves. Wiring these locations is economically unfeasible, so wireless communication must be used.
Using Enless Wireless’s Sigfox Pulse (ATEX) allows nanoGrid to obtain readings from these various meters and generate an energy report for our clients.”
