From Historic Building to Artistic Venue: The Birth of the Art Museum

Commodity Exchange

Dating back to the 16th century, the Paris Stock Exchange is an iconic landmark in the history of Paris and, by extension, the history of France. Converted into the Paris Stock Exchange in 1889, the building has undergone several periods of deterioration and transformation throughout its history and was designated a Historic Monument at the same time as Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Located in the heart of the capital, the Bourse de Commerce boasts an ideal location, which led François Pinault, one of the world’s leading collectors of contemporary art, and the renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando to launch a project to transform the building into an art museum, which will welcome its first visitors in 2020.

With 3,000 square meters of exhibition space featuring flexible layouts, the Musée de la Bourse de Commerce will showcase works from the Pinault Collection as well as pieces by other artists selected by François Pinault, and will be able to host large-scale events (screenings, concerts, performances, etc.)

A comprehensive renovation project with multiple challenges: design, visitor comfort, and the preservation of works of art

The redevelopment and restoration project for the historic Bourse de Commerce site began in the summer of 2017 and is being led by Bouygues Energies & Services*, a subsidiary of the Bouygues Construction Group and a global leader in energy, services, and digital technology with a strong track record in cultural facilities (Salle Pleyel, the Louvre Museum, the Musée d’Orsay, etc.).

This comprehensive renovation involves a wide range of challenges, and as Martin Bethenod, Deputy CEO of the Bourse de Commerce, explains, in addition to the artistic design aspect, it was essential to prioritize the more practical considerations of visitor comfort and the preservation of the artworks:

“Special attention—combined with the necessary pragmatism dictated by the constraints of a historic building—has been given to climate and lighting conditions, both artificial and natural, to the technical aspects of the facilities, and to ensuring the clarity, continuity, and comfort of the visitor experience.”

The temperature and humidity monitoring component included in the project

In light of these challenges, a "temperature and humidity monitoring" component was incorporated into the project . The initial objective of the installations is to provide a detailed assessment of the effects of climate and light on the site’s temperature and humidity, with the aim of subsequently ensuring an adequate level of comfort within the building in anticipation of its opening to visitors in 2020.

In this regard, starting in 2018, 10 Enless Wireless ambient temperature and humidity transmitters, communicating via the 169 MHz Wireless M-Bus private radio network , were installed in the rooms of the Bourse de Commerce to monitor temperature levels in real time and automatically throughout the building’s various rooms.

The °C and % RH data from the transmitters are transmitted via radio to the Enless Wireless Modbus receiver connected to a Distech PLC on site. Data monitoring is performed on site via the HMI monitoring screen. Initial tests have yielded conclusive results.

ARCONTROLS, a distributor specializing in control devices, has taken on Enless Wireless solutions. ARCONTROLS serves system integrators and HVAC installers, with 85% of its business concentrated in the Île-de-France region.

Franck Tregous, a technical sales engineer at ARCONTROLS, says: “I’ve had the opportunity to test and use Enless solutions, particularly during my previous role as a systems integrator. The range of Enless’s 169 MHz Wireless M-Bus transmitters is impressive, and the transmission quality is excellent. Data transmission is reliable, and the sensors are truly easy to use. Plus, thanks to the unlicensed radio technology, the customer doesn’t have to pay any subscription fees.”

The completely renovated Bourse de Commerce site is scheduled to open at the end of the first half of 2020. The building has also already been certified under the High Environmental Quality label.
